Resplendent Light’s “Spare Some Change” Homeless Kits began when Charles Koyama took notice of the many homeless individuals he would pass on his way to work in Downtown Los Angeles. Wanting to give these individuals something more meaningful and more useful than a couple bucks, Charles reached out to Pastor Cliff and asked whether he knew of any good alternative. Pastor Cliff gave Charles a list that was once given to him by a man that had been homeless, which contained items that he considered to be the most useful during his life on the streets. Pastor Cliff explained that he would purchase items from this list, put them in Ziploc bags and keep them in the glove compartment of his car should he happen to run across someone in need.
With the help of his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Beltran Chow, Charles decided to take action, and the Spare Some Change Homeless Kits came to fruition. Reusable drawstring backpacks were filled with socks, various toiletries, a meal replacement bar and a daily devotional. Charles kept multiple in his backpack for his trips downtown on the Metro, while Beltran and Lisa kept kits in their car for their daily commute.
On August 17, 2014 Resplendent Light held it’s first after service packing of the “Spare Some Change” Homeless Kits. The congregation was encouraged to grab a backpack or two and go down the assembly line. As bags were packed conversations began to flow— ideas shared about where to pass out the bags, what else could be added to the bags, what other ways we could share God’s love to the homeless of the Westside. It was truly an encouraging and inspiring sight to see church members young and old packing kits to take with them for the coming weeks and to see the excitement growing at the prospect of finding different ways of spreading God’s love to those in need.
